Blinds Glossary

What are Roman Blinds?

Roman blinds are soft fabric blinds that can be pulled up or down. Similar to roller blinds, they are usually operated by a chord at the side of the window, but rather than the fabric rolling over a top rod, the blind is lifted by the fabric falling in horizontal pleats.

Roman blinds can be very stylish and are a real alternative window dressing to curtains for those who want something with simple lines, that they can adjust up and down rather than side to side. These blinds are made from fabric, and are usually available in many different colours and fabrics.  The fabric is relatively light, and often, wooden rods are inserted into the pleats to help keep the fabric taut. This shows off the pleating to greater effect. Roman blinds are available as either readymade blinds from many lifestyle outlets and DIY shops. They are also available as a made-to-measure option.

Because of the lightness of the fabric, most roman blinds will need to be lined. If they are not already lined when you buy them. It is more likely that they will not be lined when you buy them readymade, but if you want to ensure that they hold their shape and block out light when required, then this is something that you may need to consider. Lining can vary in thickness and material according to your needs. If you want to completely block out the light, for example in a bedroom, then it is possible to have them lined using black out material. This is most probably only an option if you are buying made-to-measure roman blinds.

If you are buying roman blinds as readymade blinds, then remember to allow for the lining in your budget, if they are not already lined. You may need to check if you need to supply any extra rods to ensure that the blinds fall as they should.
